About Reserve Ranch

The Reserve Ranch located in both Burnet and Lampasas Counties less than one hour from a regional jet airport. There are 10 blinds with feeders and more than 10 self-feeders for the wildlife. Currently we are developing several food plots for both birds and big game animals. The ranch has an outstanding trophy whitetail herd as well as numerous exotics, which we hunt ALL YEAR LONG. For bird hunting, we utilize pen-raised quail on part of this property to insure that our guests will always have plenty of birds to hunt, even during drought years when "no one has birds." Deer and hog hunts are conducted from blinds with a guide, however we will rattle horns during the rut.

Ranch History and Management

The ranch straddles the Burnet and Lampasas County line about 4 miles West of Naruna, Texas. This is a beautiful area of the Texas Hill Country with varying topography and flora. With over a mile of Yancey Creek going through the property, headed for the Colorado River, the habitat is well suited for a variety of game. After acquisition of the ranch in 2004, a management program was implemented with the installation of game fence and stocking of multiple species of Exotic Wildlife. The herd matures on a protein feeding program and the first trophy was taken in the 2006 season.

Our program consists of a free-choice protein feeding program, habitat enhancement, limited harvest of mature animals and careful culling, all under supervision of the owner and staff biologists.

With no internal fencing, we created an area inside the ranch for the game to move freely. The 25+ species have adapted well and we continue to harvest record quality animals.
With each day spent on the ranch, we realize just how promising our future is. The foundation for wildlife on this property is outstanding and, with our careful intervention, the quality of our herds will continue to improve. Our goal is to improve on the habitat to produce a consistent, high-quality wildlife resource for our guests' enjoyment.

The Reserve Ranch proudly supports The Exotic Wildlife Association, Safari Club International, Quail Unlimited, The Texas Deer Association, and The Texas Game Wardens Association.

About the Owners

John Ed Stepan started his hunting business career in 1981 when he began organizing exotic hunting trips in the Texas Hill Country. His abilities as a guide are championed by the numerous entries in record books such as the Safari Club International, Records of Exotics, and Trophy Big Game Records. Many of his clients have taken trophies in the Top Ten in their class and set a few World Records! By 1986 he was in Zimbabwe on his first safari and 21 years later his travels have taken him all around the globe: on the African continent from the equator to the Eastern Cape, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Americas.

Over the years, John Ed has gained an in-depth knowledge and understanding of ranch and wildlife management. He began by leasing and managing land in the Texas Hill Country for trophy hunting of native and exotic animals. In 1993, he purchased his first ranch and built it from the ground up into a successful hunting and wildlife-managed property. He also began his scientific breeding program to propagate quality trophy whitetail deer. He has consulted and developed multiple properties for clients, turning raw ranch land into successful working game ranches.

In 2000, he moved his operations to South Texas on 7200 acres of the brush country. Finally after 5 successful seasons down South, he once again setlled in the Texas Hill Country not more than 25 miles from where he started. With the acquisition of the new property, John Ed continues his passion of developing hunting properties. His goal is unchanged - To improve the quality of wildlife and habitat for the enjoyment of many outdoors men, women, and families alike.

The knowledge gained from his many experiences both as an avid hunter and outdoorsman, as well as a propagator of wildlife, has given him the education necessary to operate a first-rate hunting resort.

His wife and partner, Debra Stepan, was born in Colorado and moved to Texas at an early age. After 12 years in sales, marketing, and management with a Fortune 100 corporation, she joined the Reserve Ranch in a management capacity. With her experience in dealing with large corporate clients, she offers a great insight into customers' needs. Debra shares a passion for the outdoors and has also traveled and hunted extensively in Africa, Europe, the South Pacific, and the Americas.

We will continue to improve and strive for excellence in our endeavors. Please join us at the Reserve Ranch for an outstanding Texas Safari!
